"Veil of Fog Study No. 8" Encaustic Painting

A striking contemporary, abstract encaustic art that highlights the luminosity and transparency you can achieve in layering wax.  The muted tones of black and white, with hints of gray and brown give this bold piece a softer and more serene feel.  Highly unique design with interest and movement.  Perfect size for a tabletop easel.

VEIL OF FOG STUDY NO. 8 has an intentional smooth surface, with raw edges exposed.   A gentle buffing to the surface creates a luminous shine and allows the under layer to be more present.

    SIZE: 8" x 8" on Birch Board

Close up of cream and white encaustic painting by ADALEI. Made in Raleigh NC

    Making Encaustic Art

Encaustic Art starts with purified beeswax. A ratio of crushed damar resin, a natural tree sap, is heated for hours until the medium is combined.

I use dry Earth Pigments from around the world, including our own Blue Ridge Mountains, to create custom colors. Each color is layered on birch boards using metal tools, brushes, or sometimes a gloved hand.

The layers are fused the encapsulate the pigments using a heat gun, small iron, or blow torch.

Pan Pastel and Wax Art in brown, caramel and black.

    Making Encaustic with Pan Pastel

In creating Encaustics with  Pan Pastels, the board is given a heavy layer of pigmented wax.  Then I layer the pastels on top with a technique of brushing, blending, and heat fusing them into the surface.

The effect created is similar to watercolor.   Due to heat fusing, this art does not require a fixative, however should be displayed in an area where the surface will be protected

    CARE

Encaustic art "cures" to an incredibly hard surface. t does not required framing behind glass and is easy to maintain.

Dust your art surface very lightly with a soft, white cloth. For Pan Pastels, we recommend a light dusting with a feather duster. Do not use chemicals.

A slight "clouding" might develop in your encaustic art. This is normal and the nature of wax.

You can remove clouding with a light buffing using a soft, white cloth to reveal the colors underneath and increase shine.

Contact us for a video or help.

Encaustic art is wax. It should not be in direct sunlight or rooms that are above temperature of normal living conditions.

If moving, we suggest transporting your art in a car vs. the moving van.

    DISCOVER

ENCAUSTIC PAINTING is an ancient technique of fusing dry earth "colored" pigments into purified beeswax mixed with a small amount of crushed damaar resin, a tree sap.

The pigments are kept molten until applied to the surface and reheated with a heat gun, iron, or blow torch to fuse the pigments into each layer.

Certain pieces also have a very small amount of Pan Pastels fused into the final layer to increase the dimension and depth of colors.
